M136 AT4 The M136 AT4 is the Army's primary light anti-tank weapon. The M136 AT4 is a recoilless rifle primarily used by infantry forces to engage and defeat light armor. The rifle's recoilless design allows for precise delivery of the high-explosive 84mm anti-tank warhead, with negligible recoil. The M136 AT4 is a lightweight, self-contained, anti-armour weapon consisting of a free-flying, fin-stabilized, rocket-style cartridge encased in a one-piece fiberglass-wrapped barrel. The M136 AT4 is portable and can only be fired from the right shoulder. The launcher is waterproof for easy transport and storage. Unlike the M72 LAW series, the M136 AT4 launcher does not need to be extended before firing. Although the M136 AT4 can be used in limited visibility, the shooter must be able to see and identify the target and estimate its range. After the initial configuration of the weapon, a reusable night sight mount was developed and installed. Allows the use of standard equipment for night vision. The system's tactical range is 250 meters and has been used in several combat situations. The ammunition is autonomous in a single-use launcher tube. The M136 AT4 warhead has excellent penetrating capability and deadly after-armor effects. Extremely destructive explosive in the form of a 440 gram charge penetrates over 14 inches (35.6 cm) of armor. (1) Influencing. The cone of the nose is crushed; the shock sensor activates the fuse. (2) Ignition. A piezoelectric igniter activates an electric detonator. The propellant explodes and initiates the main charge. (3) Penetration. The main charge pulls and propels the warhead body liner in a directed gas jet that penetrates the armor plate. (4) Consequences of shielding (excavation). Saab enjoyed considerable commercial success with the AT4, making it one of the most common light anti-tank weapons in the world.

The FFV began searching for a replacement for the m/68 in 1976, deliberately designing a single anti-tank weapon that could not overcome the heavy armor protection of MBTs (main battle tanks) in the front gauges, thinking it was against -productive. The FFV and the Swedish Army began the first test firings of the AT4 prototype in the spring of 1981, with 100 being tested by early 1982.

Before Sweden adopted the AT4, it was included in the US Army's competition for a new anti-tank weapon authorized by Congress in 1982, when the FGR-17 Viper failed as a replacement for the M72 LAW. The US Army tested six weapons in 1983: the British LAW 80, the German Armbrust, the French APILAS, the Norwegian M72E4 (an upgraded M72 LAW), the US Viper (for comparison purposes) and the Swedish AT4 . The U.S. Army reported to Congress in November 1983 that the FFV AT4 came closest to meeting all of the major requirements set out to replace the LAW M72,
Although very impressed with the simplicity and durability of the tested version of the AT4, the US military saw room for improvement, particularly the addition of rear and front bumpers on the launch tube and modifications to sights and slings. Following these changes, the AT4 was adopted by the United States Army as the M136 light general-purpose weapon.
The Swedish military also recognized these improvements and later adopted an Americanized version of the AT4 as the Pansarskott m/86 (Pskott m/86), with the addition of a forward folding handle to help the AT4 to point and shoot. The folding handle is the only difference between the AT4 adopted by Sweden and the US Army version.
Due to the urban combat conditions that U.S. military forces routinely encountered during the Iraq War, the U.S. Army Close Combat Systems Manager responsible for AT4 procurement suspended orders for the standard version of the AT4. the AT4, and the US Army now only orders the AT4 CS (Confined Space Version).
