Eglin Afb Finance Office - Eglin Air Force Base is located in Okaloosa County, Florida. The site was originally a national forest until the US Forest Service granted 340,000 acres when World War II broke out in Europe and the need for an airfield in Florida was evident. Today, among other functions, the base serves as a test site for non-nuclear air-to-ground weapons. More than 8,500 airmen, their families and DoD contractors work and live in more than 2,300 housing facilities at Eglin AFB. The 96th Test Wing is Eglin's host unit, while other major units include the 33rd Fighter Wing, 49th Test and Evaluation Squadron, 7th Special Forces Group, 20th Space Control Squadron, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Eglin AFB is a little different. The closest city is Valparaiso, a small town of just 5,000 inhabitants. Pensacola is 60 miles away, and if you're coming by public transportation, that's probably the hub you'll pass through on your way to the base.
Pensacola Regional Airport is home to a small terminal that is served by some major airlines. Flights here will come from most major US cities, although your options may be limited. You may need to change to a connecting flight to get here. Another smaller airport nearby is the Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport.
You'll also find a Greyhound bus station in Pensacola, and since Greyhound lines serve many areas of the United States, it could be a great option for you, especially if you're traveling alone. There is another Greyhound station at Fort Walton Beach.

If you are bringing your PCS into Eglin, the first call you should make is to the transport office. The experienced team will help you go through a checklist of everything you need for a smooth transition. They can help you with travel planning, shipping, pet questions, and more.
You need to bring the same documents and identification when you enter the base for the first time. Make sure you have your license and registration if driving to Eglin. There are several places to live around the base that are close enough to make commuting comfortable. Each village and town near the base has a somewhat unique feel, with different offerings and amenities that should appeal to everyone.
Towns close to Eglin include Valparaiso, Nicolle, Freeport, Devonian Springs and Crestview. Pensacola, the largest city near the base, is just an hour's drive away.
Valparaiso is named after a town in Indiana, which in turn is named after Valparaiso, Chile. It's a small town of around 5,000 people. The town was originally built on land discovered by a single industrialist named James E. Plow. When he leased some land to the US government, the land became the original location of Eglin AFB.
Niceville is a town of about 12,000 on Choctawhatchee Bay. It is the site of the annual Boogie Festival, formerly known as the Boogie Bay Mullet Festival. Several schools are located in or near the city, and many famous people grew up or retired here.

DeFuniak Springs is the county seat of Walton County, Florida. The city's population is over 5,000 and is home to only one of two spring-fed lakes that are almost perfectly round - Lake DeFuniak. There are no schools in Eglin, but there are many options in the neighboring community. The Okaloosa County School District is nearby and has options for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 such as Walton County Schools and Santa Rosa County Schools. A child development center in Eglin offers child care and education and other private options in the area.
Pensacola, like Florida in general, is quite humid year-round. Summers are long and hot, with brutal humidity. Cloud cover is high and clouds release most of their rain in late July. Winters are short and generally remain at moderate temperatures, rarely dropping below 40 degrees.
