Faced with a teacher shortage, Obama school principals are increasingly relying on other ways to get teachers into classrooms, including securing college graduates who want to teach but don't have the proper training.

According to 2020-21 school-level data, suburban school districts such as Homewood City Schools had no teachers using emergency first aid certification, but nearly 20% of teachers in rural Lowndes County had emergency first aid certification.

At Lowndes County Central Elementary School, one of the district's three kindergarten-through-fifth grade schools, 42 percent of its teachers are certified as emergency responders for the 2020-21 school year.

In Wilcox and Barbour counties, which have a majority of black students, staff qualification rates were close to Lound's, while Bibb and Autauga counties, which have a majority of white students, had fewer than 1% of teachers with extraordinary certification.

In 2019, the number of qualified emergency teachers increased dramatically after lawmakers approved a proposal to extend the length of time teachers can use emergency certifications to teach from one year to four years.

Davis is a success story, but it's not clear how many teachers get emergency certification, get full certification, and stick with the profession.

Currently, to qualify as a teacher, teachers must pass the Praxis Teacher Exam in their subject area, have a 2.5 GPA in their subject area, and pass the edTPA assessment, which measures teaching skills.

In school districts with "special critical needs," the district's superintendent may request an exemption from hiring and, if so, hire a teacher who scores at least two standard errors below the required Praxis score for his or her content area. he meets the additional requirements. If this exemption is approved, the teacher may obtain a non-professional teacher certificate for up to three years.
