Alabama National Guard Units - The Alabama National Guard is the United States National Guard for the state of Alabama, consisting of the Alabama Army National Guard and the Alabama Air National Guard. (The Alabama State Defense Force is the third military branch of the Alabama Military Department, part of the Alabama government but not part of the National Guard.) The National Guard is responsible for dual federal and state missions. Both armies consisted mainly of volunteer militias with regiments on either side wearing blue and gray uniforms. The Union attack fell on the Confederate left. Confederate Brig. Gen. G. Barnard Bee was discharged straight from the US Army and still wore his blue uniform. He understood the seriousness of the military left. G. Be ordered the Fourth Alabama Regiment (from the Alabama Brigade) to advance rapidly to close the gap in the Confederate line. Over the course of more than an hour, the Fourth Alabama captured several positions and overthrew several Union positions. The stand of the Fourth Alabama halted the Union advance and gave Confederate forces more time to regroup. The regiment played an important role in the battle throughout the day and contributed to the Confederate victory. The First Battle of Manas proved to both sides that the civil war would be a bitterly contested one.
